Custom Mug Printing: How It Works, Methods & Ideas
Last updated: 30 June 2026
Custom mug printing is the process of transferring your own design, photo or text onto a mug — most commonly using dye-sublimation, which fuses full-colour artwork into a special coating on the mug for a permanent, dishwasher-friendly finish. With Magic Print you upload or create a design in the browser, preview it on the mug, and we print and ship it free across India.
How custom mug printing works
The workflow is simple: you add your photo, logo or text to a mug template, position it with a live preview, and place the order. We then print your artwork, cure it onto the mug, quality-check it, and dispatch.
For full-colour photo mugs, the design is printed onto a transfer and then heat-pressed onto a polymer-coated mug at around 180–200°C. The heat turns the ink into a gas that bonds with the coating (sublimation), so the print becomes part of the surface rather than a sticker on top — that is why it does not peel or crack.
Custom mug printing methods
Dye-sublimation is the standard for vibrant, full-colour photo mugs and is what most "photo mug" orders use. It needs a sublimation-coated mug and produces edge-to-edge, photo-quality results.
UV printing is used for some hard surfaces and lets you print on mugs that are not sublimation-coated, including certain coloured and matte mugs. Screen printing suits very high volumes of a simple one- or two-colour logo. We pick the method that best fits your design, mug type and quantity.
Types of custom mugs you can print
Classic ceramic photo mugs are the most popular — great for gifts and everyday use. Magic (heat-reveal) mugs start black and reveal your photo when a hot drink is poured in, which makes them a fun surprise gift.
Travel and insulated mugs work for on-the-go branding, couple mugs come as matching pairs, and inner-colour or coloured-rim mugs add a premium touch. Tell us the look you want and we will recommend the right blank.
How to design your custom mug
Open the Design Studio, pick a mug, and upload a photo or add text, names and graphics. Use the live preview to position artwork in the print area, then add to cart and check out. There is no minimum order, so you can buy a single personalised mug or hundreds.
Design tips: use a high-resolution image (longest side ~2000px), keep important elements away from the handle, and remember the print wraps around — so a panoramic or repeating design often looks best.
Bulk & corporate mug printing
Custom mugs are one of the most-ordered corporate gifts because they get daily use and keep a logo visible. For branded employee, client or event mugs, Magic Print offers tiered B2B pricing from 50 units, GST invoicing and free delivery across India — including Diwali and festival gifting.
Caring for printed mugs
Sublimated photo mugs are durable and dishwasher- and microwave-safe in normal use, but hand-washing keeps the colours brightest over years. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the printed area. Magic (heat-reveal) mugs should always be hand-washed to protect the heat-sensitive coating.
Frequently asked questions
How does custom mug printing work?
You add a photo or text to a mug design online; we print it and, for full-colour mugs, heat-press it onto a coated mug via dye-sublimation so the image fuses into the surface. It is then cured, checked and shipped.
Are printed photo mugs dishwasher safe?
Sublimated photo mugs are dishwasher- and microwave-safe for normal use, though hand-washing keeps colours brightest. Magic (heat-reveal) mugs should be hand-washed only.
What is the minimum order for custom mugs?
There is no minimum for individuals — you can order a single custom mug. Businesses get tiered bulk pricing from 50 units.
How long does custom mug printing take?
Standard orders are produced in 3–5 business days and shipped free across India. Bulk corporate orders take 7–14 business days.
Can I print a magic (colour-changing) mug?
Yes. Magic mugs start dark and reveal your printed photo when a hot drink is added — a popular gift. Design one in the studio just like a standard photo mug.
